Dick Advocaat led the Dutch into the 1994 World Cup for what would be the first of his three spells in charge of the national team. A new and exciting side was emerging with a thrilling attack led by Dennis Bergkamp who had burst onto the scene at the European Championships two years earlier. The forward lived up to his reputation with 3 goals as the Dutch edged nervously through the group stages then eliminated the Republic of Ireland in the second round.
